When never to Trust a poltician

If I was writing a hand book for scepticism, the first thing thing in it (and the last) would be never trust a home secretary who says they do not know what they want to do and says they will consult (or listen to an enquiry). while quietly expanding the remit of that enquiry; and thereby raising the possibility of applying some repressive law in a wholy new context.. They thereby look liberal, even as they opening the door to further, more intrusive measures. The current home secretary might then really have a throughly open mind about how long people can be detained without trial, just so long as the provisions can be extended to other parties innocent or otherwise...
